Conducting Text Analysis on Reddit Transparency Report in 2023 and Collecting Data from this Report for Further Analysis

Reddit is committed to keep a safe and healthy environment for its users. The Reddit Transparency Report provides insights about how the Reddit platform conducted content moderation in 2023 to make efforts to reach its mission to "bring community, belonging, and empowerment to everyone in the world". The Reddit platform took measures including removing content and suspending accounts as a part of their content moderation.

Reddit is a platform which could be used for sharing posts, making comments, sending private messages, and chatting with other users. The comments made by users and the chat messages among users account for a very large proportion of contents which were created on Reddit platform in 2023.

Besides, nearly half of contents which were removed from Reddit platform were actioned by its content moderation mechanism, while most of the rest of the removed contents were actioned by admins.

Furthermore, around two-thirds of removal of contents based on the content moderation mechanism of Reddit platform is actioned by automated moderators, while the rest of them were actioned by manual moderators.

Less than one-fourth of Reddit accounts which were reported or flagged were taken actions in 2023.

The two data visualization pictures below showed the landscape of permanent suspension and temporary suspension of Reddit accounts as two types of content moderation. In additon, the Reddit Transparency Report broke down the accounts' suspension actions by policy areas as shown in the two visualized pictures below.

There is a small proportion of posts and comments which were created in 2023 were reported or flagged to admins. Furthermore, more than half but less than two thirds of reported comments were resulted in removal.

Less than one-tenth of chat messages which were sent in 2023 were reported or flagged to admins. In addition, there is a very small proportion of reported or flagged messages resulting in account-level sanctions.

There is an extremely small proportion of private messages which were sent in 2023 being reported or flagged to admins, while less than half of reported or flagged private messages resulted in removal. A vast majority of private messages which were removed violated relevant policy about spam. Moreover, some of other removed private messages were involved in violating relevant policies about harassment, content manipulation and so on.

The Reddit platform received a lot of government and law enforcement agency non-emergency requests from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany and some other other countries as shown in the picture below. On the other hand, they received many preservation requests from the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and so on.
